Ancient Medicine for Modern Times
Patricia Martin, Dipl. Ac. (NCCAOM), licensed as an acupuncturist in Arizona, Florida and Georgia, is a 1994 graduate of the Florida School of Acupuncture. She is presently on faculty at Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture (PIHMA), is active within the Arizona and Florida state Oriental medical associations, is a Board Member of the Arizona State Oriental Medical Association (AzSOMA) and has a private practice in Phoenix.
Previously in private practice in Florida, she was on faculty at the Florida School of Acupuncture and the T’ai Institute of Oriental Medicine. She also taught on behalf of the Florida State Oriental Medical Association and was the Vice President of the Florida State Homeopathic Medical Society. Her experience includes a half-year in Asia where she trained and worked in hospitals in Shanghai and Wuhan, Peoples Republic of China, and Medan, Sumatra.
Gail Thurman, Dipl. Ac. (NCCAOM), a 2001 graduate of T’ai Institute of Oriental Medicine in Florida, is licensed in Florida and Arizona. Following a number of years in international trade in the Far East, a decision was made to change careers. She has always believed that the body has the capacity to heal itself and consequently chose the journeys of Oriental medicine and the Qabbalah, as they most closely fit her belief system. She is politically active in the state acupuncture associations as a Board Member and as AzSOMA Membership Chairperson and as Chairperson of the Oriental Medical Education Day; she currently has a private practice in the Phoenix and the West Valley areas.
Since first becoming licensed, both Patricia and Gail have completed numerous courses of study in varying subjects including Toya Hari Japanese acupuncture, an advanced one-year program based on the philosophy and complex style of Japanese masters, many of whom are blind. They have each studied auricular (ear) acupuncture at length, which is a sophisticated mode of acupuncture differing from the more widely known meridian acupuncture. Patricia has received special training in nonsurgical facial rejuvenation. The use of sound and color is a part of their practice, enhanced by the use of tuning forks. Feel free to inquire about their multifaceted educational backgrounds.
The designation “Dipl. Ac. (NCCAOM)” is granted to licensed acupuncturists who have passed a series of examinations establishing national board certification. NCCAOM is the National Certification Committee for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, the only organization which gives these examinations. Only persons who have completed four years of training at an accredited school of acupuncture are permitted to sit for these exams. The “Dipl. Ac.” designation represents “Diplomate in Acupuncture”, signifying that one has completed the in-depth training, has passed the rigorous examinations and continues to receive continuing education in the field; it is an assurance to the public of an acupuncturist having met the highest standards set for our profession.
